IC3 Certification Project (Certiport.com)

What is IC3 Technology Certification? Certiport's Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) is the ideal certification for anyone that wants to demonstrate critical computer and Internet skills valued in today's academic and professional environments.  Because digital literacy is vital to the success in both of these endeavors, IC3 is the perfect certification to demonstrate Internet and digital literacy through a worldwide industry standard.  To become IC3 certified, you must pass three exams.  Each exam takes less that an hour to complete.
What are the three exams?
Computing Fundamentals: Key Applications: Living Online:
Computer Hardware;
Computer Software;
& Using an Operating System
Common Program Functions;
Word Processing Functions;
Spreadsheet Functions;
& Presentation Software Functions
Networks and the Internet;
Electronic Mail;
Using the Internet;
& The Impact of Computing and the Internet on Society
What is the MCSD IC3 Certification Project? Using this year's E2T2 Formula Grant funds, the district wishes to encourage and to assist faculty members in completing the IC3 certification that meets the No Child Left Behind technology literacy requirement for teachers and administrators.
How are faculty members selected/volunteer? Each school's principal will help select teachers and other faculty members who have shown an interest in IC3 certification and/or in technology integration in the classroom.
What is the district's commitment?
  • The district will purchase the IC3 exam vouchers for the three subtests of the IC3 exam with a 30 day retest option.

  • Also, purchased for each teacher are the Certiport Benchmark Mentor (pre-assessment program) and the IC3 practice test software.  This is a $90.00 investment per faculty member.

What is the faculty member's commitment?
  • Faculty members with little or no technology literacy background will need to commit approx. 75 hours of self study and preparation prior to taking the online exam.

  • Other more technology literate faculty members should commit necessary study time based on the Benchmark Mentor Pre-Assessment that will be administered by the district technology director in each K-12 school’s High School Reserve Computer Lab.

  • If additional study help or materials are needed, faculty members will commit to purchasing materials at their own expense.  District recommended textbook is listed below.

What is the timeline?
  • Introduction to the IC3 Pilot Program to interested (principal selected) faculty – (late February)

  • IC3 Benchmark pre-assessment - (early March)

  • Individual study for the IC3 Exam “on your own” – (participant’s timeframe)
